In June BWC hosted 35 people from 14 countries for the small
wind portion of the annual Wind Energy Applications and Training Symposium
(WEATS) of the American Wind Energy Association. WEATS brings in engineers
and planners from developing countries for a week of training on various
technical aspects of developing wind power projects. WEATS is supported by
the U.S. Trade and Development Agency, the U.S. Agency for International
Development, the U.S. Dept. of Energy, the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture, and the
U.S. wind industry.
At
BWC, the WEATS attendees received 1 1/2 days of seminars, toured the BWC factory
and nearby BWC installations, and participated in the installation of a 10 kW
BWC wind turbine on a distributed generation research project in Tuttle,
Oklahoma. The seminars focused on the issues relating to designing,
implementing, and supporting rural electrification and water supply/irrigation
projects utilizing small wind systems. Some of these lectures can be found
in the Tutorials section (under "Wind
School") of the BWC web site. The participants seemed to particularly like
seeing an actual wind turbine installation. In previous years the small
wind portion of WEATS has been held at research facilities such as the National
Wind Technology Center where it is more difficult to provide hands-on training.
After leaving Norman, Oklahoma the WEATS attendees
traveled to the National Wind Technology Center in Boulder, Colorado and then to
Tehachapi, California to visit large-scale wind energy developments (windfarms).
WEATS is held the week before the annual conference of the
American Wind Energy Association so that the WEATS attendees can also
participate in the conference. In 2000 the AWEA conference will be held
April 30-May 4 in Palm Springs, California, so WEATS will be held the week of
April 23-29. Anyone interested in participating in WEATS should contact
Jorge Ayarza at AWEA, T: 202-383-2500 or F: 202-383-2505 or their local office
of US-AID. All expenses for the WEATS attendees are provided by the
sponsoring agencies.
